The village of Mesao Frio was a long steep walk from our accommodation Imaginario d'El-Rei but was well worth it. We ate in the local family restaurant Atasca Do Zequinha which was run by a brother and sister. It was right at the top the hill and was almost like going into their own home. The food was excellent along with the local wines and you were made to feel part of the family. We enjoyed it so much that we returned again for our second night.

Mesao Frio is a small, quaint town in the Douro hills at the western end of Portuguese wine country. A small number of charming restaurants, nice people and vineyards abound. Great base for exploring the Upper Douro and Portugal's fantastic wine country.

Almost impossible to find - no sign, no house number.
Almost impossible to find - no sign, no house number. When I entered, I thought I was going into someone's living room. Didn't look like an inn/B&B. The owner was smoking and the entire place smelled awful. His daughter was ironing. Very odd. Had to walk up flight of stairs with luggage. Breakfast was minimal, we had to wait for bread delivery. Bathroom was tiny and shower was too.
We stayed in 10 different places this trip and this was the most expensive and the worst of all of them. Very disappointed.
We spent over 2 hours trying to find this place. A elderly woman selling cherries by the roadside was finally able to get us there. It was Sunday and by the time we found place, no place was open for dinner. Grade of F.

Location was stunning; we ate in the town two nights at Tasca da Zequinha where the host (Andre) was great fun! We also ate in the Restaurante Convivio which felt like a canteen but the food was lovely. The wine and port are also amazing.
We loved it here at Casa De Canilhas! Our room had a stunning view of the Duoro River, overlooking vineyards. Room was very comfortable and beautifully decorated. The staff was very accommodating and helpful, the breakfast (delivered to our room) was very plentiful and delicious. This was one of our most favorite places in our 5 week road trip around Portugal!!
Simply lovely and perfect in every way!!! If I'm ever lucky enough to return to Portugal, I would absolutely stay here again!!!
This place is faultless.
The owners attention to detail is quite is impressive. They have created a special place that oozes style with impeccable service from their team of staff. There is very much a ‘can do’ attitude here.
The food is fresh and all grown on the estate and the wines were superb.
It is worth being picked up from Porto Airport (a service provided by the hotel). This one of many very nice touches.
We will definitely come back.
Outstanding location with breathtaking views over Douro river. The team was awesome and really helpful. The house and garden were so nice we found it hard to leave for daytime activities. Our breakfast was served to our terrace so we could enjoy great food and view. Mesao Frio is in walking distance and you‘ll find restaurants and cafes and a supermarket. Casa de Canilhas is a highlight you should not miss!
Every room has a fantastic view of the Douro River! The casa was a great base for us to explore the Douro region from. It is also a short walk from Mesão Frio, which has good options for cafes and dinner. Our host couldn’t have been nicer and went the extra mile to be sure we were comfortable, including having his English-speaking son on hand to make check-in easy. The daily breakfast was delicious!
This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Everyone working there is so friendly and the service is excellent. Breakfast a la carte, super affordable dinner options and the premises are an absolute dream. We had a birthday celebration and they were full of unexpected details and little extra tokens.
Plus: Becas, the house dog, is our new favorite dog!
The vineyard was located high on the hill near the village of Mesão Frio, with an open vista of the Douro Valley. The environment is tranquil and natural, surrounded by plantations and with a swimming pool to take dips in the hot summer weather. The owners/staff were fantastic, especially Senhor Carlos who was friendly, humble, and happy to help with anything.
AMAZING 🤩 honestly one of the most beautiful B&B’s we have stayed at in the world. The location is so stunning, the rooms have the most amazing view and are so comfy & the FOOD - oh my gosh, the food is incredible. We ate dinner at the hotel both nights & it was exceptional - breakfast is included and it was absolutely incredible - such a magical stay!
We had an enjoyable stay in lovely location. The hotel is charming and swimming pool is really nice. The breakfast and dinner (It is very reasonable for 3 course meal with coffee, a glass of port wine and a bottle of wine for us!) were so tasty. Dinner at the hotel is highly recommended!
The breakfast was great and prepared to order. The table setting and china etc were beautiful. This place is all about the view. It was absolutely stunning and our favorite of our two weeks in Portugal. The staff was very attentive and helpful. We would definitely go back and stay longer.
The hotel is very well located and has an amazing view! The hosts are very friendly and also the breakfast was very delicious. We could use the pool and we enjoyed to sit on the terrace with a glass of wine with this incredible view. We can highly recommend this place!
Wonderful stay. This was our favourite place to stay during our three week trip in Portugal. We wish we were able to stay longer. Peaceful and stunning views. Kind staff and comfortable rooms. Great food and wine. Lovely.
We stayed there for the second time and really enjoyed it. The apartment was very clean and beautiful, had delicious brekfast and loved the outdoor area.
Mesão Frio is a good place to start discovering the Douro Valley.
We absolutely LOVED everything about our stay. This hotel was such a welcoming and relaxing place to stay i. the Duoro Valley. The interior was impeccably designed, the views were stunning, and the food was delicious.
Quinta da Veiga was the hotel we stayed at not the above mentioned. The accommodations, meals, view and staff were spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
We liked everything, the room, the hotel design & décor, cleaning, breakfast, location, the owners advise, help and warm welcoming and the staff, AC response.
