Once part of a Franciscan monastery construction of the Igreja de São Francisco began in 1245. The original church, seen on the right, was Romanesque, it was later transformed into the Gothic style and later acquired a Baroque interior.
In this photo we have three distinct architectural styles. The Gothic exterior of the original church, next to which is the Baroque fronted bell tower which now forms part of the Bolsa Palace. On the right is the Igreja da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco with its Classical facade - the most recent of the three dating back to the early 1800s.
