The stretch of coast along Costa da Caparica is home to a slightly strange geological feature where the cliffs rise not from the sea, but several hundred metres inland. This is most pronounced in the resort town itself where behind the apartment blocks is a small plain with fields. Suddenly, a steep escarpment rises up, and it is here that you will find the 16th century Convento dos Capuchos.

As you can imagine the convent commands a spectacular sweeping panorama over the coast below. In fact there is a viewpoint (miradouro) here from which you can see Lisbon and the hills of Sintra...

The huge crescent of sand that stretches southwards from the town of Costa da Caparica is home to a number of fantastic beaches. And whilst those in front of the numerous apartment blocks in the town itself are nothing to complain about, the further down the coast you head, the wider and less built up they becomes. In fact within a few km there are only sand dunes as a backdrop - keep going and it becomes a protected landscape of sculpted cliffs and forest.

For many visitors to Costa da Caparica the appeal is you can hop on a bus, train or ferry in Lisbon and be here in half an hour...

Beach 19 - Lisbon - Costa da Caparica

Beach 19 lies between the more traditionally named Praia da Bela Vista and Praia Fonte da Telha in Costa da Caparica. Just across the bridge from Lisbon this massive stretch of sandy coast is widely regarded as a beachgoer's paradise.

Before we go on it is worth explaining the name of this beach. The beaches of Costa Caparica are served by a miniature train known as the "Transpraia" which runs from the town at the northern end, all the way to Fonte da Telha about 10 km to the south....

Fonte da Telha - End of the line

The beaches of Costa da Caparica seem to be one long stretch of golden sand running from the river Tejo almost to the rugged promontory of Cabo Espichel. However, the miniature train (Transpraia) which drops visitors off at various points along this sandy coast only goes so far. 21 stops, and 8 km in fact which will drop you off at Praia da Fonte da Telha - the end of the line.

I have seen some guides giving the impression Fonte da Telha is still some sleepy fishing community with a...

Costa da Caparica beach

Costa da Caparica beach looking quiet, which is not uncommon, despite its proximity to Lisbon. Located just on the other side of the Tejo river the beach at Costa da Caparica goes on for miles, meaning there's plenty of space for everyone, even in the middle of summer.

The dunes here are home to several bars and cafes and there is even a miniature railway ferrying beachgoers to the far ends of the beach.

Costa da Caparica - Lisbon Coast

Located accross the 25 de Abril bridge from Lisbon is Costa da Caparica. The town has a beach town appeal and the beaches to match.

The further south you go the finer the beaches get, with lively beach bars and some of the best bodies in Lisbon!

This arial shot shows the more built up end of the resort and the groynes that protect the beaches from the Atlantic waves.

Costa da Caparica

A stone’s throw away from the capital on the southern side of the Tejo River, the Costa da Caparica is basically a long stretch of sandy, clean beaches to suit all types of beachgoer. Stretching right down to the Cabo Espichel, its sandy expanses are lined with acacia and eucalyptus trees and sienna-coloured cliffs however it is the first five miles to the south of the town of Caparica which are the most well-known.

Costa da Caparica beach

Caparica itself is a lively if not particularly pretty town whose overwhelming popularity with holidaying locals from Lisbon and the surrounding area rests largely on the access she offers to some ten kilometres of sandy beach.

The beach, known as Costa da Caparica, is backed by acacia and eucalyptus trees and home to a string of campsites, packed out during the summer months.

The first five kilometres of...
