Santa Engracia Church - National Pantheon

Lisbon's Santa Engracia Church which was designated Portugal's National Pantheon in 1966. Work started on the church in 1630 and it took almost 300 years to complete.

Inside are the tombs of the Portuguese presidents, writer Almeida Garrett and fado legend Amalia Rodrigues.

Estrela Basilica Dome

The huge dome that crowns the Basilica da Estrela in Lisbon.

Completed in 1790, the basilica was built by order of Maria I to celebrate the birth of her first son. Ironically, he had died of smallpox by the time the basilica was complete.

Belém National Palace

The Belém National Palace (Palácio Nacional de Belém) is the official residence of the president of Portugal.

Originally built in the 16th century by the nobleman Manuel of Portugal, the palace became a royal residence in the 18th century.

The palace is set overlooking the gardens of Afonso de Albuquerque Square and towards the Jerónimos Monastery and river Tejo beyond.

Queluz National Palace

The Rococo / Baroque style 18th-century Palácio Nacional de Queluz on the edge of Lisbon.

The palace was built as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza. Who later became King after marrying his niece Maria I. It later served as a place of incarceration for Queen Maria in her latter years after she had descended into madness
