Belem Tower

The Tower of Belem was comissioned by Manuel I in the early 15th century. It was built as a fortress in the middle of the river Tagus to protect the approach to Lisbon. However over the years the river has receded leaving the tower almost on dry land

Jeronimos Monastery - Belem

The Jeronimos Monastery in Belem, Lisbon.

Started in the 15th century by Manuel I, the monastery was more or less on the banks of the Tagus.

Over the years, the Targus has receded an the Monastery is now over 100 metres from the river.

Torre de Belem

Situated on the Tejo river front across the green from the monastery is the tower.

A fine example of Manueline architecture it also survived the earthquake.

The tower was originally in the river and guarded the enterance of the port. However the river has receeded leaving the tower high and dry.
